Virgin Active’s Sam Xulu gives us her top five exercises during the lockdown
King-Online recently got a few tips from Virgin Active personal trainer Sam Xulu on how to stay healthy during lockdown with her top 5 full-body home exercises.
Exercise doesn’t have to be extreme, or in a building, in a gym or in a boutique studio. It can take place in the comfort of your home, with or without equipment. It can range from 30–60 minutes a day of moderate-intensity or 3 – 5 days a week working on both your strength and cardiovascular fitness, with 2 – 4 days of rest.
Sam says you need to make sure that you exercise, eat nutritional foods, keep hydrated, get adequate sleep and most importantly, relax!
Sam’s Top Five
The following exercises are suitable for all age groups at different intensity levels. If you have a current injury, past injury or you’ve been feeling pain in certain areas of your body, please consult your doctor before trying the following:
1. Squats
This exercise helps with building your leg muscles – quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves.
2. Push-Ups
This exercise is beneficial for building upper body strength. They work the triceps, pectoral muscles, and shoulders.
3. Crunches
This exercise helps with strengthening your core, which includes your lower back muscles and obliques.
4. High Knees
A cardio-intensive exercise performed at a fast pace. It engages your core, strengthens all the muscles in your legs, gets your heart rate up and improves momentum, coordination and flexibility.
5. Jumping Jacks
Jumping jacks offer cardiovascular benefits. It balances out your heart rate and increases blood circulation all over.
For greater mobility and flexibility, try using collagen in your morning coffee or tea (https://king-online.co.za/nutricia-nutricia-collagen-peptides-500g) or sprinkle it over your cornflakes
