The traditional names for pelargonium include Umckaloabo, Klawerbossie, Rabassamhe Kaloba. - Pelargonium is a traditional South African remedy for treating coughs, colds, bronchitis, tuberculosis, and other respiratory problems. - Pelargonium sidoides is a plant in the geranium family that grows in South Africa. It has heart-shaped leaves and narrow flowers of deep, saturated red. It has a long history of traditional use in Southern Africa for the treatment of respiratory problems though the root is the part used medicinally.
Alcohol extract made from Pelargonium sidoides is very effective as a treatment for various respiratory problems, including acute bronchitis, the common cold, sinusitis, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis. Large studies have been used to substantiate the uses of Pelargonium.
The studies conducted require 468 adults with recent onset of acute bronchitis who were given either placebo or a standard alcohol extract of Pelargonium sidoides 3 times daily for a week. The results showed a significantly greater improvement in symptoms in the treatment group as compared to the placebo group. To ensure validity, this study was repeated with different amounts of infected adults, and once again the group who were treated with the pelargonium extract recovered much faster than those treated with placebo. The group who recovered faster were able to return to work in no more than two days without having to worry about being slowed down by illness.
